Growing up on a tough London Council Estate
Bernie grew up in a tough London council estate, and experienced hardships and struggles in his early life. He was surrounded by crime, drugs and racism and all the impact they have on a community. Â
Bernie managed to avoid the path taken by many around him, turning his back on crime he wanted to study. After leaving school with few qualifications, he became motivated to work and study and get a stable career.
Choosing a Different Path
So, he went back and resat his exams, this time round he worked hard and was successful. Getting the grades he needed to attend university, where he trained as a chartered accountant.
Sadly, his life changed profoundly following the death of his sister Beverly, from leukaemia in 1991. It was a difficult time in Bernie’s life, but through the tragedy Bernie encountered God. He was then invited to an FGB dinner, with some reservations he went along and committed his life to Jesus.
Bernie went on to serve in the Metropolitan Police, spending nearly 30 years in the police. After retiring Bernie now supports Prison Reform and investigates miscarriages of justice.
As the FGB UK was where Bernie made a commitment, he has continued in his enthusiasm for the fellowship. He now serves as an FGB regional director for the South-East.
Bernie has lots of stories to share and is a great speaker.
