The Double Life of Charlie Hansen
To many, he is Charlie Hale, the professional comedian with a joke for every occasion. But to those who know his full story, he is Charlie Hansen a man whose life is a walking testament of God’s grace and protection.
When Charlie share’s he pulls back the curtain on a life defined by high stakes and narrow escapes. A journey toward faith that started on the football pitches of Warrington.
Growing Up & Standing Out
Charlie’s story begins in a different era of Warrington. He stood out from a young age, and he learnt fit into the role.
"There were only two Black families in this town," he recalls. "The Cummins and the Hansens. I was one of the Hansens."
While he jokes that his name might link him to a £20 million fortune waiting for him in a Ghanaian royal family. His real “royal blood” came later. Back then, Charlie’s only “religion” was the beautiful game, which consumed his every waking moment. By age 12, he was a local legend nicknamed “Pele”, he had a God given talent with a ball.
"I had clubs chasing me left and right," Charlie says. "Manchester City, Coventry... even the great Bobby Charlton asked me if I’d like to come to Manchester United after a cup final."
The Day the Dream Dimmed
Charlie admits he wasn’t much for academics.
"I was daydreaming in school about football. I never really tried at math, geography, or history."
When teachers warned him to learn a trade in case of injury, Charlie’s youthful arrogance took over. He felt invincible thinking he was “too tough” to get injured. He ignored his teachers’ advice to learn a trade. Convinced that his future was written in the stars or at least on the turf of a stadium.
That invincibility was shattered in a split second on a youth centre field.
"I bent down to pick up a football. A lad launched a javelin from the other end of the field. I didn’t even know it was coming. It hit me right in the top of the head, on the point. At over a hundred miles an hour, that should have gone straight through and killed me. But by the grace of Jesus Christ, I’m here now."
That moment was the first “nudge” from God, though it took years for Charlie to fully trade the stadium lights for the light of the Gospel.
Following a knee injury that dramatically changed the direction of his life, and he needed to get a new career.
The Comedian and the Evangelist
Today, Charlie balances two worlds that people often think don’t mix – Comedy and Evangelism. He uses his gift for laughter to break down walls, whether he’s joking about the “UFC elbow” his wife gives him. Or sharing stories of his “Spider-Man” granddad.
But beneath the punchlines is a serious message. Charlie speaks about his search for truth before becoming a Christian. From wandering into mosques to dealing with door-knocking witnesses. He eventually found that he didn’t need to “fix himself up” to find God.
